Dermatology in France Role of Dermatologists and Best Clinics

Where is the Birthplace of Dermatology?

The birthplace of modern dermatology is considered to be Vienna, Austria in the 19th century.

Ferdinand von Hebra (1816-1880) is considered the founder of modern dermatology. He was a professor of dermatology at the University of Vienna and made major contributions to the classification and description of skin diseases.

The Vienna School of Dermatology, founded by Hebra, was very influential in the 19th century and helped establish dermatology as a distinct medical specialty. Hebra’s students and successors continued developing the field.

In 1801, the first dermatology clinic opened in Vienna General Hospital. This is considered the first dedicated clinic for skin diseases.

The Vienna General Hospital was at the forefront of dermatology teaching and research in the 1800s under Hebra and his successors. It set standards for clinical diagnosis and classification of skin diseases.

Hebra created an “atlas of skin diseases” in 1856 that categorized skin conditions, which was a landmark development in the field. This classification system influenced later diagnostics.

Other major figures in the Viennese school included Karl von Rokitansky, Joseph Skoda, and Moritz Kaposi. They helped progress dermatopathology, dermatosurgery and other areas.
